This Vintage Amethyst Bishop's Ring is fabulous! The ring is based on an original French 13th century ring and was sold by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It comes with original paperwork from the Met giving the background story. How special! The ring holds one prong set genuine amethyst in a cabachon oval shape. The purple color of the amethyst is beautiful. The top inside of the ring is marked 14k 585 and MMA RMN. The paperwork explains that the ring is 14k gold that has been plated with 24-karat gold. The stone measures approximately 12 x 15.5 mm and the ring has a rise of approximately 10.5 mm. This stunning ring with a great story behind it would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Similar fine jewelry rings currently offered at the MET are typically priced over $2,000.
Amethysts have been used in religious jewelry and many crown jewels for centuries. Some believe that amethyst is a calming stone promoting balance and peace. Because of its color the Greeks associated amethyst with Bacchus, the god of wine. Others believed that amethyst provided a clear head and quick wit in battle and business.
