Opals have rich meaning in history. Opals have been said to foster love, passion, loyalty, faithfulness, emotional expressiveness, warmth and spontaneity. In Roman times opals were, after emeralds, the most valued gem. In the Victorian Era opals were thought to symbolize hope and love. Opals are the birthstone for October and Sapphires are the birthstone for September.
